Body Imprint #9
Dimensions: 8 x 10 inches
Year Created: 2021
This is an original watercolor painting on cold press heavyweight watercolor paper. Hand signed by me at the bottom. From an ongoing watercolor series of the human form. I call them my "body imprint" series because they mimic that of the body being pressed against glass.
My body imprint paintings are a practice in subtraction. I eliminate as much of the body as allows, and the whole process is intuitive…similar to a blind line contour. Building it in transparent layers, I focus on the flow of the human form. The end result always has unexpected elements that I adore
I've always been fascinated with the relationship between the mind and body. We are interchangeably linked to our physical selves and there is a direct connection between our mental and physical states in everything that we do. I address the human form by combining both realism and elements of abstraction and spontaneity in order to show the ambiguous and mysterious nature of the human mind. I like the juxtaposition of the body next to a clean white background. For me, although the white background is technically "blank space," it also has a weight to it. Like the figure is floating in this opaque space that has infinite depth.
