A part of my ongoing series of studies depicting bison, this is an original watercolor painting. Inspired by a photo I took in Caprock Canyon State Park (Located in the panhandle of Texas). This bison is part of the Goodnight Herd that resides there.
My interest in the American bison grew through time spent in Colorado and Utah, as well as countless scenic drives across Texas. There is an undeniable, wild majesty to them that feels both ancient and alive. In this painting, crisp edges are paired with areas of restrained abstraction to echo the buffalo’s untamed spirit. A lasting symbol of the Great Plains, the bison’s survival from near extinction carries deep significance, and this work aims to foster respect and awareness for their enduring place in North American history.
